Welcome to our website. My name is Mike Kruse. I’m here today to talk about a topic: “What do I enjoy, what do I like about practicing criminal law?” As a criminal defense lawyer, it’s a very challenging occupation. Trial work, the competition of being in court is so pervasive in my life. Every day I wake up with new challenges, helping people who are charged with criminal offenses, DUI, sexual assault, we do the full spectrum of criminal offenses and right from the start of my career in 1989, I really enjoyed this challenge. You’re here to uphold the rule of law and force the crown to try and prove their case beyond reasonable doubt. That’s their burden. Everyone deserves a break. I have clients who are innocent. I have clients who were factually guilty and I feel everyone deserves a rule of law in Canada. This is a challenge for me. I try and bring it every day and do my best and it’s so rewarding especially when the client’s found not guilty and especially when they’re, you know, when I truly know they’re innocent. But even for those people who were factually guilty, you know, no one likes to hear this but people deserve a break and people’s lives do change and most of my clients who have been found not guilty who were perhaps guilty, some of them have really change their lives for the better and learn their lesson. Those who are truly innocent, I’d feel I’ve done a good service to them. I try and bring something new to the court every day. It’s a constant learning curve and for this reason, it’s been such a rewarding career and I just love it and I wanna continue with it for the rest of my career.
